Sydney Trip - September 2009

*Tuesday 29 September*

Happy birthday to me. Woke up early, actually took a while to get off to
sleep last night, I think it was just being in a strange (if very
comfortable) bed. Showered and was just thinking about breakfast when my
parents called. They used the Skype number that I gave them as it came
through on Fring, although there was a marked delay between both ends.
At least it proves it works, if not as well as I had hoped.

Breakfast was very busy and I had to sit at the back, looks like they
had at least one coach load of guests to deal with.

Left the hotel just about 9 am and heading into the CBD to do some
shopping. I was planning on getting a new umbrella and one of the Crazy
John's prepaid USB wireless modems. Neither of which I got, my attempt
to purchase the modem was thwarted by their lack of stock and although I
did find some nice umbrellas in David Jones, I decided I might as well
wait until I get home to purchase one.

I went to Central Station to get ticket for later this evening when I go
to the opera and see which platform the city circle trains leave from,
it looks like its various ones, but at least there is a display to let
you know which one is next.

Caught up with Ken at Central Station and and a great time in the
afternoon. He might be coming to Melbourne later this year, so it will
be good to catch up again when he's down my way.

Had a bit of headache in the afternoon, so took a couple of pills and
stayed in bed, I didn't want to miss the opera. The headache quickly
cleared but I stayed indoor until 6.30pm. I walked to Circular Quay,
which took about 30 minutes and I grabbed something to eat on the way.

I had a great seat for the performance of the Mikado, front row, right
in front of the orchestra pit. The show was very entertaining and parts
had been updated with modern references (and even product placement –
Mazada got a couple of mentions as the main sponsor). Not sure why
Anthony Warlow was channeling Tommy Cooper for his performance, but it
made it all the more funny (for me at least).

Some of the singing was a bit difficult to follow (even though it was in
english), so seeing the surtitles may have been useful.

Got back around 10.30 and just been updating this journal.
